No Surprise Act

On January 1, 2022, a federal law went into place called the "No Surprise Act". This law requires health care providers to provide clients a "Good Faith Estimate" (GFE) of the cost of services provided by the health care provider.

Under this law, a health care provider mush provide a self-pay client with a notice and the GFE for all scheduled services. The GFE is provided to clients who may not yet have scheduled an appointment and upon request.

No Suprise Act for Self-Pay Clients: Medical Vs. Mental Health

Health care providers are responsible to provide notice and a GFE to self-pay clients only. These are clients who:

  1. Do not have insurance benefits, or

  2. Do not plan on using insurance benefits to cover the services provided

In many ways, the No Surprise Act is very helpful as it protects patients undergoing medical care. It prevents these patients from discovering, after they receive care, that they owe a large medical bill for un-covered services that they were not informed about ahead of the care they received.

From a medical care perspective, this makes a lot of sense. There have been situations where a patient is quoted one rate for a procedure only to have the procedure and be charged a much higher rate. Some patients have experienced bankruptcy as a result.

No Suprise Act & Mental Health Care

However, predicting the number of sessions in men's therapy is different than quoting the cost of a medical procedure. In providing counseling for men, we can’t necessarily provide a concrete answer on the number of sessions it will take to treat anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, depression, ADHD/ADD, trauma, PTSD, anger marriage counseling, couples therapy, or other challenges.

There are a several factors that make it nearly impossible to quantify what will be needed in a mental health care setting. And there is no way to foresee and give a “good faith estimate” on whether or not a client will want to return for a “tune-up” down the road.

This new Federal Law largely applies to medical health providers. And while it is impossible to quantify the estimate for therapy service, we are also required to implement this law,

Katy Counseling for Men & Good Faith Estimate for Men's Counseling

An African American man with a short beard, white t-shirt, open blue casual button up shirt, blue jeans, clasping his hands in front of him, elbows resting on his knees, sitting in a shair, looking at an African American woman sitting across from him holding a pen and clip board. This represents the need for neurofeedback in katy, tx and male trauma therapist near me. This also represents the need for panic attack treatment in katy, tx 77494.

At Katy Counseling for Men, we support your right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for therapy services provided with us. You may ask us for a Good Faith Estimate prior to starting men's counseling with us and at any time while you are a client with us.

On average, completing therapy generally take around 5-6 months. And as it is nearly impossible to provide a concrete estimate of cost for men's therapy, our Good Faith Estimate is calculated as follows:

  • Total estimated charges if you attend therapy one time weekly for 1, 13, 26, 39, and 52 weeks of therapy.

  • Total estimated charges if you attend therapy two times weekly for 1, 13, 26, 39, and 52 weeks of therapy.

While a typical course of therapy on average is 5-6 months, we feel the above provides valuable information on how to estimate your cost of therapy services provided.

A Good Faith Estimate is included for each new client in their initial session paperwork. Here clients can review, ask questions, and sign stating they have received the GFE.

And at any time, you are welcomed to ask for a GFE from your men's counselor, front office, or owner at Katy Counseling for Men.

As a practice, transparency is important to us as a practice as individual counselors who specialize in counseling for men. For more information on our individual rate, please see our "Rates & Insurance" page on our website.
